As consumers in our society, we’re often told we can “vote with our wallets”. Perhaps you consciously choose items at the store with less wasteful packaging. Maybe you bring your own bags when you shop or commute to work by bicycle. You might have purchased a hybrid or electric vehicle to minimize your impact on the environment. Many of us, though, have yet to consider that we can do something similar with our portfolios by choosing investments that reflect our values.
Sustainable investing refers to investments made in companies, organizations, or funds with the intention to generate a measurable, beneficial social or environmental impact along with a financial return. You may have also heard the terms Impact Investing, ESG Investing (taking into account Environmental, Social and Governance factors), Socially Responsible Investing or Green investing. Each is slightly different in practice but what they have in common is the desire to make a difference with your investments.
At On the Trail, we are focused on sustainable investing options that allow you to align your money and your values.
